Leadership and Staff Team

Oakham Baptist Church is a gathering of Christians who have dedicated their lives to mutually supporting and caring for each other; this is known as a church membership. The church members gather throughout the year to pray and discern matters affecting the future ministry of the church, and they also discern leaders from amongst the members to carry out the day to day leadership tasks of the church (Deacons). Some of these Deacons also represent the church legally to the charities commision as Trustees.

Oakham Baptist Church also call a minister from the Baptist Union to help lead and guide the future of the church. The minister has the overall responsibility for spiritual direction, health, pastoral care, vision, teaching and encouragement of the fellowship. OBC is also blessed by being able to employ staff for various tasks.
Baptist churches also appoint secretaries, but this isn't what you might think! The Church Secretary is a vital role within church life. Not only are they responsible for calling and recording membership discernment meetings, they must work closely with the minister to ensure the direction and foundation of the church are healthy. The secretary liasses with the Baptist Union on a range of issues and is the primary contact for church related matters.

Rev. Tom Bowring - Minister   Joy Steele- Church Secretary and Deacon
Hi I’m Tom, my wife Jodi and I have 4 amazing children and love the life God has given us here at Oakham Baptist Church. It’s such a warm, friendly, loving family of believers, we feel so blessed to be here. I gave my life to Jesus when I was 26 during my first visit to a church, and before moving into full time ministry I spent 14 years in the RAF.
I’m an evangelist at heart and I love talking to people about Jesus and hearing about their lives.
Hi, I’m Joy married to Bryan and mum to three wonderful children who are married to three lovely spouses. We have five grandsons who keep us busy. I was privileged to grow up in a loving Christian home but knew as a teenager that I needed to ask Jesus to be Lord of my life.

We have lived in Chicago, USA and in Holland as well as though out the UK but are now fully committed to seeing the Kingdom of God grow here in Rutland.

Hi, I’m Merv and my wife Sue and I have been connected in one form or another with OBC for over 30 years. We love being part of the church family. We’ve two married sons and are blessed with four beautiful grandchildren.
I was brought up in a loving Christian home but the penny didn’t drop about what Jesus had actually done for me until I was in my late twenties. I’ve now hung up my flying boots after working in the aviation industry for nearly 40 years, but I’m still as passionate as ever to see people flying in their faith!
