Judges

Judges (1)

From January until August we will be going through the book of Judges and asking what happens when there is no king in Israel?

Judges tells the story of a time of history where the people of God did what was right in their own eyes. They called individual leaders to take the reigns based upon who would serve them best in their fight against the surrounding nations. These leaders rarely followed God and did what they wanted, and in every instance it led to calamity, destruction and death. We'll hear about some names you may be familiar with; Gideon, Samson, Deborah, and some you may not heard of such as Ehud, Tola and Jephthah. As we will see, things start of pretty bad and only get worse. By the end of the book we read about rape, genocide and civil war blighting the nation.

The book of Judges repeats the same phrase toward the end; "In those days there was no king in Israel; everybody did what was right in their own eyes."

In a world where people want to make their own individual choices and not be held accountable to an overall truth such as the morality that comes from God, we are in every danger of seeing the world of Judges in our own time, some would argue we are already there. But is the course for humanity always disobedience and death? There must be a better way; a way of life?
